ALLERGY DOCTOR NEAR ME Allergic rhinitis, also known as hay fever, affects approximately 20 percent of people of all ages. The most common symptoms include nasal itching, watery nasal discharge, sneezing, itchy red eyes, sore throat, or hoarse voice. It is caused by a nasal reaction to small airborne particles called allergens. In some people, these particles also cause reactions in the lungs (asthma) and eyes (allergic conjunctivitis). One of the first steps in treating any allergic condition is to avoid or minimize exposure to the allergens that cause the condition. The four major categories of allergens that trigger allergic rhinitis: 1. Pollens 2. Insects like house dust mites and cockroaches 3. Animal allergens (skin, fur, feathers, saliva) 4. Molds The most common indoor allergens are dust mites and cat and dog dander. The some of the recommendations for reducing exposure to animal dander are to remove animal from house, or at minimum, keep animal out of patient’s bedroom or use HEPA filter in the room. Dust mites are a microscopic type of insect that live in bedding, sofas, carpets, or any woven material. For prevention against dust mites, mattress, pillows should be encased in allergen impermeable covers. The bedding should be washed weekly in warm water with detergent and to reduce indoor humidity to less than 50%. The cockroaches can be prevented or controlled by using poison bait or traps. The home should be periodically thoroughly cleaned. The food should be encased fully and garbage and papers should not stored inside the home. The moldy surfaces should be cleaned with dilute bleach solution and water leaks should be fixed. All foods should be stored in sealed containers to prevent thriving of rodents. Outdoor allergens, especially pollens and molds, are difficult to avoid. However patients with documented sensitivity can enact several measures like closing the windows at home and in the car, using air conditioners to filter the air, and staying indoors when possible. Showering before bed to remove allergens from hair and skin can help reduce contamination of the bedding. There should be a constant discussion with a specialist, regarding preventive measures. The treatment of allergic rhinitis should always be under supervision of a specialist.
